Suez Canal Blocked by Container Ship
The Suez Canal, one of the world's busiest waterways and the shortest shipping path between Europe and Asia, has been blocked by a massive container ship that has run aground. Early on March 23, the 400-meter-long Ever Provided container ship ran aground as it travelled north from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, twisting diagonally around the canal's width. The canal runs via Egypt and links the Mediterranean Sea port of Port Said with the Indian Ocean through the Red Sea port of Suez. The canal allows for more direct shipping between Europe and Asia, removing the need to circumnavigate Africa and shortening journey times by days or weeks.
